Empowering Young Female Footballers
During last scholastic year, through School Based Youth Work in Verdala Secondary School, Bormla, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ identified a particular need: girls lacked the opportunity and space to practice football. There were several barriers which prevented girls’ access to the most popular sport in Malta; football. It is thus why as Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, through its South Youth Services, an opportunity was provided to these girls.

Through the support of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, a service was established in which young people from all spheres of life, are provided with the opportunity to practice football once every week at the Kottonera Youth Cafe. Starting in January, this initiative has provided girls several opportunities:

·         More than 20 young people met with Malta’s Women National Team players.
·         More than 20 different young people attended at least one training session.
·         11 of the young people who made use of this service have now joined nearby football academies to play competitive football.
·         Worked in collaboration with the MFA Women’s Football Department at organising a football festival in the Ta’ Qali National Team Training Grounds.
·         Provided different routes of football involvement, ranging from playing to administrative roles.
·         Empowered young people in contacting other agencies, namely the MFA, as well as leadership roles in the training sessions.
·         Barriers were broken in enabling young people a fun and safe environment where they can engage in physical activity.

In all of this, positive coaching and even more so, positive reinforcement, together with energy, were the driving force in achieving these results. For us, our ‘trophies’ are these young people enjoying this beautiful sport. It is not about results, but active participation. Football holds great power and can be used as a medium to make a positive change in the lives of young people; something that goes in line with Aġenzija Żgħażagħ’s mission to support young people in meeting their needs and aspirations.
