Model European Parliament Malta
#MEPATHON
July 2017

“I definitely increased my skills in public speaking and debating during these three meetings.” – Nigel Caruana

“Mepathon provided me with the opportunity to construct new friendships and acknowledge the necessity of teamwork for success in life.” – Samuel Cutajar

“If I had to describe my holistic experience of MEPATHON - Model European Parliament in one word, it would have to be inspiring.” – Marina Grama

Over a period of 3 intensive days, 15 young people competed for the right to respresent Malta during MEP Helsinki. The Model European Parliament Malta was co-ordinated by Agenzija Zghazagh as the Maltese branch of MEP Europe, and peer led by previous participants of MEP – Matt Micallef St. John, Erica Camilleri, Roberta Spiteri, Maria Ellul and Chiara Vassallo.

Introductory sessions focusing of public speaking, debating, resolution writing and the EU Parliament preceded the committee sittings. 3 committees were formed with the task of presenting a resolution on the assigned topics – the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, combatting large scale cyber crime and Education and Mobility. These were subsequently presented to the General Assembly for approval. The approved resolutions were also compiled together and forwarded to Maltese MEPs.

A video message from MEP Dr. Roberta Metsola and a personal visit to the offices of Agenzija Zghazagh where #MEPATHON was taking place by MEP Dr. Miriam Dalli added to the value of the experience and served to motivate the participants as they worked on their resolutions.

Although it proved a challenging task to choose only 4 delegates, since everyone’s input was deemed valid for the resolutions and for the event itself, finally, and with only a few marks separating them from the rest of the participants, Marina Grama, Samuel Cutajar, Thomas Cassar Ruggier and Nigel Caruana were declared winners of #MEPATHON. They will join Maria Ellul, who was nominated Committee President following her participation in MEP Netherlands, and together they will be representing Malta during MEP Helsinki which will be held in November 2017.

Asked to comment about their motivation and experience of #MEPATHON, the winners replied as follows:

SAMUEL CUTAJAR

Mepathon was personally not only a mere debating course but simultaneously assisted me to enhance specific skills and qualities deemed essential in everyday life. The experience exposed me to an opportunity to develop the art of debate whilst also providing me with the opportunity to construct new friendships and acknowledge the necessity of teamwork for success in life. It helped me extract not only my personal information regarding EU education, environmental and security policies but also explore the different EU institutions, their functions and their influence on our lives. Ultimately, this Mepathon was also an eye-opener regarding my future and would recommend it to any teenager who aspires to evolve a career linked to verbal discourse.

MARINA GRAMA

If I had to describe my holistic experience of MEPATHON - Model European Parliament in one word, it would have to be inspiring. Thanks to the sessions I attended, not only did I learn key values and skills, such as collaboration and the art of debate respectively, which would help me bring about a positive change in society, but it also led me to discover my true inner potential. By acknowledging both the diligence and the dedication displayed by each participant, I came to realize that if one puts heart and soul into an endeavor, anything can be accomplished.

NIGEL CARUANA

That is how I describe my experience in MEPATHON. At first, when I read the application form, I thought it was going to only consist of lots of work and research. However, to my surprise it was unexpectedly fun! I definitely increased my skills in public speaking and debating during these three meetings. I also realised that there is more to the European Union than most people think. Through my research I found out lots of struggles that Europe had to solve, starting from terrorism to climate change and being given the opportunity to voice my opinions was exceptional. In the conclusion of these 3 days I ended up with a big group of friends that even consist of the most reserved and quiet people. I truly cannot wait to experience the next MEPATHON.

THOMAS CASSAR RUGGIER

I have been interested in the European Union ever since I went to Strasbourg to visit the European Institutions In January 2016 where I was also given the opportunity to act as an MEP for one day. Currently I am first Year University student studying European studies as my main area. I am interested in attending mepathon and hopefully be given the chance to be sent to Helsinki as I aspire to focus on politics. Moreover, I am taking this as an opportunity broaden my horizons and learn something new as I would interact with new people, both in Malta and from abroad and hopefully build on my team skills which would be of benefit for me in the future.
