Understanding Democracy through Civic Education

To date over 1000 young people have attended the civic education seminars – 3E citizens and Voting Voices Responsible Choices that Aġenzija Zgħażagħ is currently offering students in Years 9, 10, 11 and some post-secondary institutions. The main goal of these workshops is for students to understand and appreciate democracy. Lowering the voting age to 16 was a key milestone in the widening of the franchise in Malta and these hands-on sessions aim to increase young people’s awareness of democratic processes.

The seminars are divided into workshops that focus on young people active participation both in terms of making their voice heard and voting on the issues discussed. Various outcomes are evident but mainly these sessions are a space and opportunity for young people to speak in public, debate in a safe environment, use critical thinking, learn about the electoral process, and understand voting as their right but also as a responsibility.
